Chanel Joan Elkayam

Chanel Joan Elkayam designer

I first met Chanel on the opening night of Manchester Fashion Week. I immediately fell in love with her personality and her designs. At only 17 years of age, Chanel's designs opened the second day of Manchester Fashion Week and she definitely made a lasting impression.

In this short interview, I got to know more about Chanel as a fashion designer and her plans for the future.

To begin, could you tell me a little bit about yourself?
My name is Chanel Joan Elkayam, I am 17 years old and I have just completed my A-levels in Textiles, Business Studies, Graphic design and an EPQ in Fashion.

How did you get into fashion design?
Ever since I was a child I have been interested in fashion design, I always used to draw my ideas in lots of little diaries and I made so many dresses for my dolls! Fashion has always been something that I’ve had a personal connection with and I cant imagine a world without design in it.

In addition to my education and as a consequence of my work experience, at 16 years old, I felt ready to start my own clothing line.  I conducted the planning, designing and sketching as well as my target market, style, mood boards, materials, shape, color schemes, pattern and design. I also organised a fashion show to exhibit my very first collection. The outfits had proven to be worth all the hard work I had put in.

How would you describe your style?
My collections are very elegant and suitable for any occasion.  I can say that the style of my collections really reflect me as a person and the general things I get inspired by on a daily basis. I'm really inspired by uniform, vintage clothing and simplicity in which specific details make a garment unique, bold and sophisticated.

Who/what inspires your designs?
When I was little I always used to look at the clothes in my mothers wardrobe and I used to think how beautiful they are and different from everybody else’s clothing. I am inspired by vintage clothing, uniform and simplicity in which specific details stand out and express a persons beauty. Designers which I am inspired by are Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana. I am also inspired by stylish people such as Kate Middleton and Victoria Beckham. Women inspire me, I want to make women feel beautiful and confident in the garment they are wearing.

For you, what was the best part of Manchester Fashion Week?
Manchester Fashion Week was the most amazing opportunity! My clothing line opened the night and everything about the event was amazing. It was so wonderful to have worked with so many professionals from the industry. The public, press and media loved my collection and I made so many contacts.

The best part of Manchester Fashion Week was the finale of my show when the entire audience stood up and gave me a standing ovation. Words cannot describe how I felt during those minutes, it was unbelievable. It was that feeling that you get when everything you have worked so hard for has just been acknowledged in the best way possible by the general public, press and media.

What will your next project be?
My next project is to work on a small collection of haute couture garments. I also aim to show my work at London Fashion Week.
I am also currently finishing the design for my website closely working with an extraordinary website developer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years time I hope to be a global influential fashion designer with boutiques across the globe, and be sold in places like Selfridges, Harrods and Bergdorf Goodman. I hope that one day I would have the opportunity to design an outfit for Kate Middleton because I really like her style.

My goal is to reach the top of the industry and I will continue pushing myself to work harder and harder to achieve my goals.
The fashion industry is a whole other world made up by talented individuals, each and every one of them have built it up to what it is today. I would love to one day meet and have the opportunity to work with Karl Lagerfeld, I admire his work so much.
